History Of Shimla Water Catchment Wildlife Sanctuary- Conserved Forest Since 1878
The 1020.32-hectare Shimla water catchment and wildlife sanctuary has been under conservation for more than 145 years now. In 1878 it was leased from the estates of the Rana of Koti for INR 2,250 per year, by the British government on behalf of the Shimla Municipal Corporation. In 1891 new Catchment area was added and annual rent was fixed INR 3,250 yearly, and villages were relocated outside the catchment area. The construction of the Seog reservoir and Seog rest house followed in 1901.
The forest was declared a protected forest in 1952 and a Wildlife Sanctuary in 1958. In 2009, it was handed over to the Wildlife wing of the Himachal Pradesh Forest Department.
During the period of British rule, a total of 25 water tanks were constructed in the reservoir. This gravity-based system supplied water to the town of Shimla, which had a population of 16,000 residents at that time. Additionally, a direct water pipeline was installed to provide water to the Viceregal Lodge, which served as the summer retreat of the British Raj. Currently, 11 sources are perennial and 14 seasonal sources are present.
